This is the life! A rest day today on board El Vencedor and Diva. Two of our group just happened to have a 40ft launch each – shame!! Spent the day relaxing off Onetangi Beach at Waiheke Island on the boats with a spot of fishing off Motatapu Island, loads of eating and many bottles of wine!! Karen taught us about phosphorous later in the evening from an inflatable dinghy. (what happens in camp….stays in camp!!). A huge thank you to Captains Denny & Val and Jim for looking after us and giving us a taste of the “high life”.

The afternoon was one of the most spectacular flights I have experienced in the Tiger Moth. The sun came out as we followed the coastline from Kaitaia to Paihia in the Bay of Islands. We flew out to the hole in the rock at Cape Brett and continued down the coastline for a fuel stop at Whangarei. A huge thank you to Laura from Air NZ in Whangarei who took her car and Pete into town for the coffee and fuel run. What a legend! “Jerry” was pretty excited at our choice of ride into town. He happily sat in the passenger seat next to Laura beaming the whole time. From Whangarei we continued down the coast to Orewa and inland to the North Shore Aero Club where we parked up the planes for a couple of nights and headed out to Gulf Harbour where a 40ft launch was waiting for our trip out to Waiheke Island.

Along with Jim & Denny in CUG and Nick & Karen in NKH, we left Kaitaia at 10am heading for the most northern point of the trip – Cape Reinga. The flight up 90 mile beach took about an hour and was smooth all the way although the weather was very hazy. As we approached Cape Maria van Diemen it was really eerie and as we rounded the corner to Cape Reinga it was quite an unsettling feeling. It felt like this incredibly spiritual place was allowing us to pass through, but we were not encouraged to linger. Amazingly when we were back on the ground later all three planes had had the same experience and feelings. Our journey took us across Spirits Bay to North Cape and then for the first time the compass showed a new heading…”southwards”. We made our way down Great Exhibition Bay and across to the Karikari Peninsula before heading back to Kaitaia for lunch.
